I did it a couple years back on the Forth of July. There was still a bunch of snow on the trail and Amphitheater Lake was almost totally covered in ice. My friend and I set up our tent on 2 feet of snow pack a couple hundred feet from Surprise Lake. Beautiful scenery though, even if we were kind of stupid for camping on snow on the Forth of July.
